Many people don’t take vacations often enough. In fact, according to a poll on this site, around half of readers don’t take annual vacations; in fact, many readers never take them! And now with increasing frequency, when we do take vacations, we often bring work along with us, keeping ourselves essentially still in the work mindset we’re trying to escape. This is unfortunate for several reasons:
The bottom line is that taking a good amount of time away from the stresses of daily life can give us the break we need so that we can return to our lives refreshed and better equipped to handle whatever comes.
While not everyone is able to take a vacation, for those who can take several days or a few weeks off for a trip, I’ve compiled the following resources from some of About.com’s travel sites. These can help you plan the best type of trip for yourself so you can come back feeling ready for anything. (For those of you who can’t take off enough time for a traditional vacation trip, keep reading; I’ll have resources for you, too.)
For those who don’t have the time or money to take a ‘formal’ vacation, I have an article on quick, cheap vacations that will give you some creative ideas on how to get a nice break and enjoy the benefits of a vacation, for less.
On August 4th, 2008, and again on August 6th, Alliance Library System, in cooperation with LearningTimes, will offer a one-day conference exploring the possibilities of using virtual worlds to teach literature and to promote its appreciation for people of all ages.
The conference, entitled “Stepping into Literature: Bringing New Life to Books through Virtual Worlds,” will be held entirely in the virtual world of Second Life, allowing participants to attend from any location with a computer and a broadband internet connection.
Whether you teach literature, or are just intrigued by the potential for learning in 3D worlds, we hope you will join us for a meaningful exploration of the instructional possibilities.
Cost to attend is US $65 per person. For group rates (5 or more) write to john@learningtimes.net
Or visit the conference website at:
http://www.steppingintovirtualworlds.org.
Participants will take take part in a virtual book discussion, and take field trips into literature-based locations that have been created in Second Life. You may find yourself in an Edgar Allen Poe poem, visiting a “secret garden” or learning about gothic literature in an authentically spooky mansion.
Keynotes:
Beth Ritter-Gluth (Desideria Stockton in Second Life) will be the keynote speaker and her talk is on “A Vision for Making Literature Come Alive in Virtual Worlds.” She is the creator of “Literature Alive in Second Life” and teaches English and Women’s Studies at Lehigh Carbon Community College in Schnecksville, PA.
The keynote author is Kim Rufer-Bach who will speak on “Using Virtual Worlds to Promote Real Life Literature.” Kimberly is co-author of “Creating Your World: The Official Guide to Advanced Content Creation for Second Life” (Sybex, October 2007) and is currently at work on “The Second Life Grid: The Official Guide to Communication Collaboration, and Community Engagement.”

The 80th Annual Academy Awards ceremony is due to take place on February 24, though the event could be affected by the U.S. screenwriters’ strike.
We want your students to imagine that the nominated actors decide not to turn up for the ceremony. Talk about the nominations below – Which films have students seen? Who do they think should win the Oscars. Then get each student to choose an actor and prepare an Oscar acceptance speech on behalf of that actor. Now turn your class into the Oscar awards ceremony. Students take turns to give their speech on behalf of the actor they chose.
Best actress
Cate Blanchett, Elizabeth: The Golden Age
Julie Christie, Away from Her
Marion Cotillard, La Vie en Rose
Laura Linney, The Savages
Ellen Page, Juno
Best actor
George Clooney, Michael Clayton
Daniel Day-Lewis, There Will Be Blood
Johnny Depp, Sweeney Todd
Tommy Lee Jones, In the Valley of Elah
Viggo Mortensen, Eastern Promises
Which film do students think should win the award for Best Picture? They can vote for the film of their choice in the forums section at its-myworld. The nominees are Atonement, Juno, Michael Clayton, No Country for Old Men, and There Will Be Blood.
To vote for Best Picture go to the forums section at

Free download: 911 is the number you call in the United States if you have an emergency, and February 16 is the 40th anniversary of the very first 911 call. To mark the anniversary, download this free classroom activity and find out if your students could cope in an emergency.
As a warmer to the activity, write the number 911 on the board and ask your students if they know what the number is. Ask them what number(s) they need to call in their own country to contact the emergency services. Then ask if they know what number they can phone from a mobile/cellular phone in any European country to get assistance in an emergency. [Answer: 112]
To download the free activity follow the link below and choose 911: iT’s an emergency! from the list of activities.

Free online activity: February 14, as we all know, is Valentine’s Day. To celebrate the occasion, we’re giving free access to a romantic interactive exercise from the its-english website. In the activity, students complete valentine poems. They might like to write one of these in a card to send to someone they love.
As a lead in to the activity, ask students how popular it is amongst their friends to send valentine cards. Do any of them send valentine e-cards, or would they worry that these might not impress the person they want to get to know better?
Don’t forget that its-myworld users can send valentine e-cards from the e-cards section at its-myworld.
To access the interactive activity go to

February 13 is Get A Different Name Day. This is an opportunity for students to change their name for a day. The following is part of an activity from the current issue of iT’s for Teachers.
Dictate the following questions and get students to discuss the answers in groups:
Why were you given the name you have?
Does your name have a meaning?
Do you like your name?
If you could change your name, what name would you choose?
Write the names below on the board (but not the ones in brackets):
Curtis James Jackson (50 Cent)
Paul David Hewson (Bono)
Marshall Bruce Mathers III (Eminem)
Norma Jean Baker (Marilyn Monroe)
Jennifer Anastassakis (Jennifer Aniston)
Michael Penniman (Mika)
Allen Stewart Konigsberg (Woody Allen)
Tell your students these are the real names of famous people. Do they know, or can they guess, who? If not, write the stars’ names on the board. Can they match them with their real names? Do they know the real names of any other stars?
Magazine subscribers can download the full activity from its-teachers

Editor’s Note
Are cell phones banned in your district? Should they be? Do you feel that cell phones are an annoying distraction that take students off task and are best turned off and left in a backpack during the school day? Or do you see them as powerful, readily-available computing devices that we should be using to educate students? Take this month’s quick poll and let us know what you think. We invite you to share your own experiences with cell phones in school.
