    The Argentimes

Edition 42 of The Argentimes is out tomorrow. As usual we will be holding the edition’s launch party tonight – Thursday- where you can get your hands on the paper before anyone else, as well as mingle with fellow Argentimers

Join us for our launch event tonight in San Telmo at La Divina Comedia, Dorrego 683, from 8pm. And if you show up before 9.30pm your first beer is on us, courtesy of Cerveceria Patagonia Primitiva.

As usual, the Argentimes’ agenda will provide you with your indispensable guide to what’s going on in Buenos Aires

But here are some of the fortnight’s highlights not to be missed.

Friday 1st August marks the start of Festival de la Luz – Encuentros Abiertos, Latin America’s biggest photography exhibition, at 300 galleries in and around Buenos Aires. For a full agenda, visit http://encuentrosabiertos.com.ar

If you can’t make it tonight, scroll down to find out where we distribute so you can get your hands on a copy of the capital’s number one English-language newspaper from tomorrow. Edition 42 is now also available online at http://www.theargentimes.com/downloads

    And here’s a taster of what’s inside.

A new theory is taking the tango world by a storm: using the dance as a therapy for diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Anette Berve went along to the first international tango therapy conference in Rosario to find out just how much weight the theory held.

what else is on this edition?

Despite numerous government pledges, air pollution remains a visible problem in Buenos Aires and other urban centres in Argentina. Sam Walker investigates whether congestion, climate change or simple public indifference are to blame.

How safe is your barrio? The team behind La Prueba de la Bicicleta have come up with a novel way of finding out: leave an unlocked bicycle on the street and film how long it takes to be stolen. The Argentimes talks to them about their idea and what they hope to prove.

The Importance of Vacations, for Stress Relief, Productivity and Health

Many people don’t take vacations often enough. In fact, according to a poll on this site, around half of readers don’t take annual vacations; in fact, many readers never take them! And now with increasing frequency, when we do take vacations, we often bring work along with us, keeping ourselves essentially still in the work mindset we’re trying to escape. This is unfortunate for several reasons:

    • Vacations Promote Creativity: A good vacation can help us to reconnect with ourselves, operating as a vehicle for self-discovery and helping us get back to feeling our best.
    • Vacations Stave Off Burnout: Workers who take regular time to relax are less likely to experience burnout, making them more creative and productive than their overworked, under-rested counterparts.
    • Vacations Can Keep Us Healthy: Taking regular time off to ‘recharge your batteries’, thereby keeping stress levels lower, can keep you healthier
    • Vacations Can Strengthen Bonds: Spending time enjoying life with loved ones can keep relationships strong, helping you enjoy the good times more and helping you through the stress of the hard times. In fact, a study by the Arizona Department of Health and Human Services found that women who took vacations were more satisfied with their marriages.
    • Vacations Can Help With Your Job Performance: As the authors of the above study suggest, the psychological benefits that come with more frequent vacations lead to increased quality of life, and that can lead to increased quality of work on the job.

The bottom line is that taking a good amount of time away from the stresses of daily life can give us the break we need so that we can return to our lives refreshed and better equipped to handle whatever comes.

While not everyone is able to take a vacation, for those who can take several days or a few weeks off for a trip, I’ve compiled the following resources from some of About.com’s travel sites. These can help you plan the best type of trip for yourself so you can come back feeling ready for anything. (For those of you who can’t take off enough time for a traditional vacation trip, keep reading; I’ll have resources for you, too.)

For those who don’t have the time or money to take a ‘formal’ vacation, I have an article on quick, cheap vacations that will give you some creative ideas on how to get a nice break and enjoy the benefits of a vacation, for less.

    Best picture

The 80th Annual Academy Awards ceremony is due to take place on February 24, though the event could be affected by the U.S. screenwriters’ strike.

We want your students to imagine that the nominated actors decide not to turn up for the ceremony. Talk about the nominations below – Which films have students seen? Who do they think should win the Oscars. Then get each student to choose an actor and prepare an Oscar acceptance speech on behalf of that actor. Now turn your class into the Oscar awards ceremony. Students take turns to give their speech on behalf of the actor they chose.

    Best actress
Cate Blanchett, Elizabeth: The Golden Age
    Julie Christie, Away from Her
Marion Cotillard, La Vie en Rose
    Laura Linney, The Savages
    Ellen Page, Juno

    Best actor
    George Clooney, Michael Clayton
Daniel Day-Lewis, There Will Be Blood
    Johnny Depp, Sweeney Todd
Tommy Lee Jones, In the Valley of Elah
    Viggo Mortensen, Eastern Promises

Which film do students think should win the award for Best Picture? They can vote for the film of their choice in the forums section at its-myworld. The nominees are Atonement, Juno, Michael Clayton, No Country for Old Men, and There Will Be Blood.

To vote for Best Picture go to the forums section at
    http://www.its-myworld.com/

    911: iT’s an emergency!

Free download: 911 is the number you call in the United States if you have an emergency, and February 16 is the 40th anniversary of the very first 911 call. To mark the anniversary, download this free classroom activity and find out if your students could cope in an emergency.

As a warmer to the activity, write the number 911 on the board and ask your students if they know what the number is. Ask them what number(s) they need to call in their own country to contact the emergency services. Then ask if they know what number they can phone from a mobile/cellular phone in any European country to get assistance in an emergency. [Answer: 112]

To download the free activity follow the link below and choose 911: iT’s an emergency! from the list of activities.

    Be my valentine

Free online activity: February 14, as we all know, is Valentine’s Day. To celebrate the occasion, we’re giving free access to a romantic interactive exercise from the its-english website. In the activity, students complete valentine poems. They might like to write one of these in a card to send to someone they love.

As a lead in to the activity, ask students how popular it is amongst their friends to send valentine cards. Do any of them send valentine e-cards, or would they worry that these might not impress the person they want to get to know better?

Don’t forget that its-myworld users can send valentine e-cards from the e-cards section at its-myworld.

To access the interactive activity go to
    http://www.its-english.com/festive/special/ex2.asp

    Get a different name day

February 13 is Get A Different Name Day. This is an opportunity for students to change their name for a day. The following is part of an activity from the current issue of iT’s for Teachers.

Dictate the following questions and get students to discuss the answers in groups:
Why were you given the name you have?
Does your name have a meaning?
    Do you like your name?
If you could change your name, what name would you choose?

Write the names below on the board (but not the ones in brackets):
    Curtis James Jackson (50 Cent)
    Paul David Hewson (Bono)
    Marshall Bruce Mathers III (Eminem)
    Norma Jean Baker (Marilyn Monroe)
    Jennifer Anastassakis (Jennifer Aniston)
    Michael Penniman (Mika)
    Allen Stewart Konigsberg (Woody Allen)

Tell your students these are the real names of famous people. Do they know, or can they guess, who? If not, write the stars’ names on the board. Can they match them with their real names? Do they know the real names of any other stars?

Magazine subscribers can download the full activity from its-teachers
