The week of November 16-23 is “Bullying Awareness Week”.
The theme for 2008 is Stand Up to Bullying!
While it is great that bullying is being recognized as a
major problem it is vital that everyone be aware that Bullying is a
24/7, 365 day activity. It is a crime to leave this crime
unchallenged. In the November editions of the Brain Facts e-zine
I thought I’d send you 20+ critical one-liners to help you
better arm yourself as you develop programs and strategies
to combat the bullying activity in your school and in your
community.
#1. Bullying is much more than a learned behavior.
Note: The myth that bullying is simply a learned behavior is
not supported by research and distracts from establishing
meaningful anti-bullying programs. This myth further
prevents people from skillfully dealing with a bullying problem.
#2. Bullying is repetitive acts of physical, psychological or
sexual violence against one or more victims.
#3a. Bullying is a dysfunctional, Antisocial Behavior driven
largely by internal fears and survival needs.
#3b. Bullies bully to meet emotional needs for power, control,
status and an enhanced sense of self.
#3c. Bullying can quickly become psychologically addictive.
#4. Between 20 to 25% of schoolyard bullies are likely to
develop Antisocial Personality Disorder.
#5. Between 20 to 25% of victims of schoolyard bullying are
likely to develop serious anxiety disorders.
#6. A great many schoolyard bullies become adult bullies.
#7. Most bullies underperform as students, employees,
parents and leaders.
#8. Most bullies are afraid of taking calculated risks and
accepting responsibility.
#9. Some children use bullying as a “quick means”
to meet parental expectations.
