1. Not long to go!
In less than a week’s time, more than two thousand registered education professionals from all over the world will gather in Berlin at the e-learning event of the year.

We would like to invite you to a range of exciting networking events at this year’s ONLINE EDUCA BERLIN. Awaiting you on Thursday are the “Knowledge Exchange and Speed Networking” sessions. You may also join colleagues who are interested in the same topics and discuss them at lunchtime in the Special Interest Group Lunches. Please check the message boards in the registration area to see which themes will be discussed at which table and reserve your place onsite. In the evening, you can relax and meet with colleagues, friends and old and new contacts at the E-Lounge@OEB over a drink and a wonderful meal. Please reserve your ticket as soon as possible!

Fronter and IBM invite you to a series of presentation sessions offering insight into their latest products and best practices. On Thursday, December 4th, and Friday, December 5th, a live radio show will be broadcasted at 11:00 from the ICWE booth in the exhibition area. Graham Attwell will feature emerging issues from this year’s conference. The show will be made available afterwards as a podcast.

We will also conduct a range of podcast interviews covering this year’s hot conference topics, such as Generation Y learning, Open Educational Resources, New Products and Tools, Web 2.0 in universities and at the workplace and many more. You can listen to the podcasts at our stand or subscribe via RSS feed. We will send the link to you shortly before the conference. Finally, be on the lookout for our film crew, which will be busy capturing this year’s event.

We are looking forward to three exciting days of learning and networking with you in Berlin!

2. Poll: Economic Crisis Boosts E-Learning
The world’s present economic woes are opening up new opportunities for innovative forms of education and training such as informal learning, e-learning and blended learning. Faced with shrinking budgets, businesses find the use of learning technologies to be increasingly attractive: This was the appraisal articulated by the consultants and training professionals who responded to an impromptu survey undertaken by OEB.

3. Copyrights: Who Owns What on the Web?
Digital web content presents big challenges for the legislative and licensing framework regarding copyright and other types of intellectual property rights (IPR). In the session Who Owns What on the Web? on Thursday, December 4th, Dr Derek Stephens, Loughborough University, UK, will focus on higher and further education institutions and how they can be sufficiently prepared to deal with the subject.

4. Learning Together: 10 Years of Best Practice at Fronter
The New Millennials are entering universities and workplaces worldwide. While experts still debate the question whether generational differences exist, universities and corporate training departments have to deal with the challenges faced by the new learners. “Collaborative”, “achievement-orientated” and “networked” are just a few terms that describe them. We have asked Roger Larsen, Managing Director and Founder of Fronter, market leader in providing open learning platforms for schools and universities, how his company is tackling the challenge. Larsen is one of the keynote speakers at OEB 2008.

5. E-Learning for Kids: Benjamin’s House of Wonderful Words
Creating learning environments for sightless people poses a significant challenge for content developers, especially when the target group is children. During the whole development process, all stimuli from the visual world have to be suppressed, and innovative approaches need to be found to keep young learners engaged. So how can an exciting learning environment for blind children be created? At OEB 2008, Nicholas Kind from Spark Learning Ltd. gives insights on the development process of a sophisticated online learning resource that not only offers fun and educational benefits for blind children but for the sighted, too.

6. Open Educational Resources: Threat or Opportunity for Publishers?
Educational publishers need to invest more in the development of online content if they want to compete with open educational resources in the long run, says Artur Dyro from Young Digital Planet, a leading European e-learning publisher. Dyro will join the panel in the Friday morning plenary on December 5th, discussing approaches as to how OER and commercial publishers can coexist.

7. Promoting Cultural Dialogue with E-Learning
A shared interest to acquaint people with cultural values and backgrounds as highly diverse as Hungary, Turkey and Japan is the motivating force that stands behind the e-learning project Learning Design of Courses Utilising ICT for Promoting Intercultural Dialogue that Dr Kumiko Aoki, National Institute of Multimedia Education, Japan, and Molnar Pal, Karolu Gaspar University, Hungary, will present at OEB 2008. On the initiative of three local media-education departments, two bi-national tele-collaborative classes were started to provide participants with in-depth information about each other’s attitudes towards their varying perceptions of reality.

8. Best Practice: Hands-on Legal Practice via E-Learning
Blackboard reinforces its commitment to the professional education and institution sectors by bringing its professional education suite to ONLINE EDUCA BERLIN. 9. Expert Session: Publishing Meets E-Learning
Learning content is increasingly available on the Internet without any cost. The presence of open educational resources may help promote goals like lifelong learning and access for all, but at the same time new problems arise. What about the quality of free online courses? How can learning content be delivered systematically and sustainably? And which role does the publishing industry play in the future of e-learning? At OEB 2008, an expert session chaired by Dr Richard Straub, Secretary General at the European Learning Industry Group (ELIG), will shed light on these emerging issues.
